Working group meeting Berlin Aroma Forum International e.V. on the subject of smoking.
- October 2021 from Verena Grewenig
AroFI member Gabi Halama introduced the topic of “smoking” with her great lecture and a comprehensive collection of material. After all, smoking is considered to be one, if not the first, form of using scents for cultic or even hygienic purposes.
There are many reasons for incense: be it transformational thoughts, messages to heaven, the achievement of certain states of consciousness, community rituals, or even the cleaning of rooms or the expedient preservation of food.
Occasions for incense ranged from disinfection (of e.g. sick rooms), relaxation, meditation or strengthening to thanksgiving incense after overcoming hardships or fulfilled wishes.
Smoking is done throughout the year, in the annual cycle many nature-related Celtic and (adopted) Christian traditions can be named and celebrated. Astronomical celebrations include the solstices in winter and summer and the equinoxes in autumn and spring.
Incense materials range from roots (e.g. angelica), to herb (tansy, sage), resins/gums (pine resin, spruce resin), bark/wood (juniper, stone pine, lime), flowers (verbena, clary sage), to leaves/needles/buds (rosemary, clove). Certain incense substances are smoked on certain occasions.
Incense is burned with different means: Incense sticks, incense cones, incense spirals, incense bunches, incense cords, with the incense pan, the resin burner, the incense stove and on coal.
