Technical/didactic requirements

In order to ensure a high quality standard for basic/basic and advanced courses, the majority of the lessons must be conducted by aroma practitioners, aroma therapists, aromaologists, aroma experts with self-qualification of at least 170 hours of theory lessons. Of course, additional experts for individual contents, e.g. massage, can be included.

Basic and advanced seminars are advanced training courses and enable the correct, basic implementation of aroma care/aroma therapy for people (they do not replace a complete training as an aroma expert).

1.1 The objectives of the qualification are to enable the participants to

Within the framework of health promotion, therapy, support and care, to put into practice their scientific and holistically acquired knowledge of essential and fatty plant oils and hydrolates for healthy and sick people

To support and accompany people who apply the concept of aromatherapy/care and to pass on knowledge to others

1.2 Content of the qualification

Within the framework of the qualification, theory and practice of essential and fatty vegetable oils and hydrolates are comprehensively taught.

Topics are among others:

  • Definitions of terms and legal bases
  • Botany – plant families, taxonomy, and signature theory
  • Process for the preparation of essential and fatty vegetable oils and of hydrolates
  • Biochemistry and quality assurance
  • Basics of the application
  • Systematic presentation of about 70 essential oils, fatty vegetable oils, hydrolates and their application, also in special areas (e.g. children, very old people)
  • Special aroma-practical procedures such as creating recipes, performing aroma massages
  • Excursions (botanical garden, to a distillery, to an oil mill)
  •  Scientific work and didactics

1.3 Methodology

  • The different teaching contents are closely interlinked and thus promote exemplary learning
  • Practical and personal experiences of the participants are consciously included and the transfer of practice in the sense of  wholeness is established
  • All lecturers are qualified as aroma therapists, aroma experts or aroma practitioners or have proven expert knowledge and practical experience in their teaching subject

1.4 Structure

It is recommended to carry out the qualification in 6 to 8 multi-day modules (spread over approx. 1 year)

Total number of hours: 330 hours, i.e. at least 170 hours theory, 60 hours technical/project work, 100 hours controlled self-stu

  • Written and oral final examinations – with medical attendance
  • Technical/project work with short presentation

2. Aroma seminars

Technical-didactical requirements

2.1 General information

In order to ensure a high quality standard for basic/basic and advanced courses, the main part of the lessons must be conducted by aroma practitioners, aroma therapists, aromaologists, aroma experts with self-qualification of at least 150 hours of theory.

Of course, additional experts (m/f) can be employed for individual contents, e.g. massages.

2.2 Basic and advanced aroma care seminars

Basic and advanced seminars are advanced training courses. They enable the correct, basic implementation of aroma care/aroma therapy on humans. (This does not yet result in experts or aroma experts!)

2.3 Recommended contents for two-day basic and advanced aroma seminars

2.3.1 Basic seminar 2 days, contents:

Small presentation of the history of fragrance

Basics, terms, legal issues

Why and where do plants produce essential oils?

Short introduction: botany, cultivation, extraction, purchase, bottle declaration, shelf life, dosage, modes of action, adulteration and testing methods

Small overview of the biochemistry of essential oils (really only an overview!)

Aromatherapy practice: smelling, room scenting with head, heart and base notes, application through the skin with dosage suggestions

Basics of hydrolates, rose and peppermint hydrolate

Oil monographs of essential oils of orange, lemon, lavender, tea tree, peppermint, rose geranium

Short summary of the basics of fatty vegetable oils

Fatty vegetable oil monographs: olive, St. John’s wort, apricot kernel and jojoba oil

Aroma massages 1st day head massage, 2nd day ear massage

2.3.2 Advanced seminar 2 days, contents:

Repetition Biochemistry

Oil monographs:

Bergamot, Tangerine: Exemplary essential oils for relaxation/for restful sleep

Palmarosa, Niaouli: Exemplary essential oils for skin care/decubitus prophylaxis
