Online seminar “Antibacterial and antiviral effect of essential oils” with Prof. Dr. Jürgen Reichling
- May 2021 from Verena Grewenig
On 04.05.2021 the first online seminar of Aroma Forum International e. V. took place. After a short welcome by the president of the association Maria Hoch, an exciting and very informative lecture by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Reichling about the antiviral and antibacterial effect of essential oils followed.
He demonstrated the effect of essential oils with numerous scientific studies in wound management and clarified the antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal modes of action in relation to wounds. Here, the proven effect of essential oils on multi-resistant pathogens with their biofilms is of great importance. Essential oils disturb the quorum sensing, the communication and the resulting accumulation of bacteria among themselves. This has a great medical importance e.g. on infections of the urinary tract, chronic wounds, gingivitis, endocarditis, gastritis and infections through catheters.
Essential oils are also very effective in the area of herpes viruses e.g. cold sores. Essential oils are multi-substance mixtures, sometimes with up to 500 different ingredients. In this regard, they prevent superinfection through their antiviral and antibacterial mode of action, which is not the case with conventional treatment methods using ointments.
The 1.5 h lecture was very informative and entertaining. Afterwards, the 38 participants from Belgium, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Switzerland had the opportunity to ask Prof. Reichling questions. He was happy to answer them in detail.
After a total of almost 2.5 hours, Ms. Hoch thanked all participants and especially Prof. Jürgen Reichling for this informative, great lecture.
